Christ Church Gate was built in 1517.
The elaborate carvings and shields are dedicated to the last patron of the Abbey - Prince Arthur, who was the older brother of Henry VIII. When Prince Arthur died in 1502, it paved the way for his younger brother to become King of England.
The original statue of Christ was destroyed in 1642 by Parliamentarians during the English Civil War when it was used for target practice. The current bronze figure of Christ was installed in 1991 bringing the gate back to its full glory.
