Charminar was built in 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah supposedly as a promise to Allah to honor a promise Quli Qutb Shah made to Allah for the end of a plague in Hyderabad.

The Charminar is a square monument measuring 20 meters by 20 meters made of granite. Each corner has a 48 meter pointed minaret. These four carved minarets have four stories each, marked by a delicately carved ring around the minaret. There are 149 winding steps in the minarets up to the top floor which provides a panoramic view of the city. The minarets supposedly honor the first four khalifas of Islam.
The mosque occupies the top most floor of the monument. Each side of the monument consists of an 11 meter wide by 20 meter high arch. The arches each had a clock installed in 1889.
