Much of the Great Allegheny Passage is built on the abandoned grades of the Western Maryland Railway (WM) and the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad (P&LE). When fully complete, the Great Allegheny Passage trail will be 150 miles long from Cumberland, MD to Pittsburgh, PA. The Passage links up in Cumberland with the C&O Canal towpath trail from Washington, DC. The combined trails will total 318 miles for hiking and biking!
When the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad season is running (May-Dec), this trailhead location is jumping. Very popular with cyclists, you can arrange to ride the train from Cumberland, MD, to here in Frostburg with your bike in order to hop on to the GAP trail here. The Trail Inn has modern, clean rooms and a campground, too. There is a restaurant in the Depot and Linn's Cafe at the Inn. You can also visit the Thrasher Carriage Museum and if you are lucky, you'll be there to see them turn the steam engine around on the turntable!
Frostburg has a number of businesses that cater to hikers and cyclists and they can be found on the GAP website.
The trail is open to hikers and cyclists, and for some sections to equestrians. It has a crushed limestone surface and since it was originally a canal and railroad route the surface is smooth and the up and down grades are minimal.
Check the GAP website for more info and for seasonal section closures.
