There are about half a dozen Hanging Stones on Dartmoor, various legends go with the stones, such as anyone caught stealing sheep would be hung on the stone, another being an initiation rite of suspending a poor new farmhand from a rock while the rest of the lads got on with the drift. They would release him when they were finished, which could be the following day.
(A drift is where all the farmers would go out onto the moor and collect in all the animals at the same time.)
The stone also acts as a boundary point for Whitchurch/Peter Tavy parishes.
Type of survey mark: Very large granite boulder.
What indicators are near the mark to help people identify where it is located?: Set in stone wall.
What property is this mark defining?: Boundary point between Whitchurch/Peter Tavy parishes.
