The River Styx is an important contributor to the formation of Mammoth Cave. As such, its emergence from the limestone is an important geologic event that visitors would like to explore.
Like all rivers, the River Styx is prone to flooding. Because of its close proximity to the Green River, the River Styx also receives some the floodwaters of the Green River.
This combination makes the trail to the River Styx Spring susceptible to standing water and muddy conditions, which does not accomodate the many visitors to the Mammoth Cave National Park who wish to see this natural wonder.
This boardwalk solves all these problems under normal conditions. The boardwalk will be closed during severe flood events.
This waymark does not require any tickets or pre-arranged tours from the Mammoth Cave Visitor's Center.
Approximate boardwalk length (feet): 150
What is the boardwalk over?: This boardwalk protects the River Styx floodplain and its soft, wet soils from visitors' trampling feet.
Boardwalk material: wood
