His origins are disputed by several countries. Some claim he was from Genoa -
Italy, some he was Catalan of Basque (Spanish) or French. There´s also a theory
that he was a Portuguese Nobleman born in the village of Cuba in Alentejo being
this the reason for the name of the Island of Cuba.
I dont know wich theory is the real one, but, one thing is true. He lived in the
Island of Porto Santo where he married his wife, Filipa Moniz daughter of the
First Captain of
Porto Santo and one of the discoverers of
Madeira and he has crossed this seas that his statue is watching right now.
Can you imagine how this place was in the XIV century?
