Historic Hangar One was built in 1921 to house the ZR-1 Shenandoah Blimp. By 1928 Lakehurst was the first international airport in the United States with the Graf Zeppelin starting its round the world flights at Lakehurst.

In 1936, the German Zeppelin Hindenburg made 10 flights here and on May 6, 1937, it exploded and burned near the mooring mast. The massive hangars that housed these collosal crafts still stand. The last blimp flight for US Navy blimps was in 1962.

After the decline of airship travel, Lakehurst focused on helicopters in the 1940s through the 1960s. Now known as NAVAIR at NAES Lakehurst, this installation leads in Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment (ALRE) and Support Equipment (SE). The Aircraft Platform Interface (API), is improving air travel from mobile carriers and increasing the effectiveness of our mobile air security.

Due to the many types of fuels and products developed, this site has multiple cleanup sites, in sediment, soil and groundwater. Types of contaminates include: Base Neutral Acids, Dioxins/Dibenzofurans, Inorganics, Metals, Organics, PAH, PCBs, Pesticides, Petroleum Hydrocarbon, VOC.

Due to increased security, access to base is limited. The once open view fields are blocked by tall trees. History buffs wanting to see the historic Hangar One must apply for a tour with the Historical Society. A background check will be run before your tour is approved. (limited viewings).

The EPA site lists the address as the main gate on Route 547 in Lakehurst. These is your coordinates.
