The Northwest Fork of the Loxahatchee River was the first federally designated Wild and Scenic River in the state of Florida. This river travels through large fresh water cypress strand and meanders through hammocks and eventually meets estuarine mangroves. Most of the Northwest Fork lies within Jonathon Dickenson State Park and has been maintained as a natural area.
The Northwest Fork eventually meets the estuarine waters from the Atlantic Ocean through the Jupiter Inlet. This fork is only one of three prongs that make up the Loxahatchee Estuary. Together the River and the Estuary support many species of fish, birds and mammals including Snook, Osprey and Manatees.
