(Wilmington, DE). Downtown Dino Days, presented by the DuPont Company in partnership with the City of Wilmington, Wilmington Renaissance Corporation (WRC) and the Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD) is coming to the streets of Wilmington May through October 2002.

“We are proud to present an art project that has proven fantastically successful in communities all over the country and that will draw tremendous numbers of people to our wonderful City,” said Sylvia Banks of DuPont.

Sponsoring organizations have already chosen their artists and designs, following a competition organized by DCAD. The dino designs will range from train conductors to astronauts, colorful mosaics to painted collages.

The art project officially started Tuesday, January 29, 2002, as artists, sponsors and friends of the dinosaurs’ party and artists pick-up their “naked,” fiberglass dinos at the Delaware College of Art and Design. Over the next two months over 40 local artists will “dress” the family of dinos, which vary in height between 4-6 feet.

“This is the type of team effort on the part of business, government, the artistic community and the public that helps to make Wilmington a more attractive, interesting and fun City,” Wilmington Mayor James M. Baker said. “I am very grateful to WRC, the College of Art and Design, the talented artists and to our generous sponsors for making this project a reality.”

The completed dinos will arrive at their rightful homes in the City of Wilmington in late April and be on display throughout the summer. Strategically placed on the streets, sidewalks and parks of Wilmington, the dinos form a large, dinosaur footprint on the City’s downtown.

“We are all anticipating a great response from Wilmington, the surrounding communities and beyond,” said Geoff Rogers, WRC Chairman. “This is the perfect opportunity for people to bring their families into the City and experience the downtown at its best.”

Similar art projects have proven tremendous successes in many communities, including New York City, Belfast, ME, Baltimore, MD, and Cincinnati, OH.
