Construction of this 3-time award winning building was completed in February of 2005. This 48.5 million dollar complex is completely owned by the citizens of Kamloops. It was designed to conserve energy by maximizing use of natural light, natural ventilation, and energy efficient materials. The site consists of a man made wetland that was created from left over water produced in the water filtration process. To minimize waste, the pond water is used to irrigate the adjacent ball park while providing habitat to the local wildlife. This 'green' structure supports a living roof consisting of drought resistant plants. These plants are also irrigated from the ponds. The living roof provides extra insulation in both the summer and winter. In the summer the roof helps reflect and absorb heat while in the winter heat retention is obtained. The center treats from 28 to 100 million liters a day with its specially designed membrane filtration system. Peak production tops out at 160 million liters a day. As the city population increases the technology can be expanded to be capable of filtering 200 million liters a day.
