This Fire Bell, inscripted A&T Burt Ltd, Founders, Dunedin. 1901, stands outside the Waihi Fire Station at 69 Kenny Street, in the old gold mining town of Waihi.
The Fire Station was formed in 1896 and established in 1899. It now functions with a team of 15 volunteer firefighters and 2 fire engines.
Waihi is especially notable for its history as a gold mine town. The township grew around the mining operations since the discovery of gold in 1878 by prospectors.
This old bell is a historic reminder from those early days and is still used today.
