Portions of this old drive in theater are still visible from I-93, (still called Route 128 by some of us) in Braintree, near the exit for Route 37, near the South Shore Plaza Mall. When is was operating, drivers could even see portions of any movies being projected onto the facing screen.
According to sources used, the South Shore Plaza Twin drive in theater had a capacity of about 1400 cars and had two screens. It was operating certainly in the 1960s and was run by then named General Drive-In Theatre Group, which later became General Cinema (this company was later absorbed into AMC). It was one of the first two twin screen drive in theares in the East Cost. From comments left on CinemaTreasures.org, the cinema closed in 1986.
Today, one screen is the most recognizable remnant of the old drive in. The screen is in fair to poor condition. CinemaTreasures.org mentioned that the Massport Shuttle bus terminal was the original concession stand. Currently, the parking areas are for employees, and the field in front of the cinema is unused. There also is a sign as you approach that likely was part of the drive in.
To get to this location, from the Route 128 ramps, go south to the first set of lights and turn right. Go along Forbes Street around the Sheraton Tara Hotel. Follow along the road, taking the right fork at an intersection, until you get to the sign and the Massport Shuttle terminal.
