Construction of the Split Point Lighthouse in 1891 was on of the last major investments by the colony of Victoria to safeguard navigation through the treacherous waters of Bass Strait. Having this lighthouse between Cape Otway and Point Lonsdale improved the safety of shipping which supported the development of colonial Australia.

Anderson and Sons, a Melbourne company, built a 34 metre high lighthouse from concrete rubble on a clay foundation.

The original kerosene light was converted to automated operation with acetylene gas in 1919. With this automation lighthouse keepers were no longer needed.

The original system of lenses and prisms still focuses the beam which is visible on a clear night some 33km out to sea. The light has four flashes over 10 seconds, repeated after a 10 second gap.

Fondly known by locals as "The White Queen", Split Point Lighthouse has found international fame in the film "Mad Max", as well as literature in "The Clue of the New Shoe and Firestorm!" by Arthur Upfield.

This lightstation remains part of Australia's network of navigational aids, maintained around Australia's 36,700km of coastline for the safety of shipping by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

The vital statistics:
Character: Group flash 4 every 20 seconds
Light source: 120V 1000W tungsten halogen lamp
Power source: mains with standby
Intensity: white 116000cd, red 23000cd
Elevation: 66m
Range: white 20 nautical miles, red 16 nautical miles
Tower height: 34m
