Situated in the village of Whakapapa at the base of Mt Ruapehu in the Tongariro National Park, this visitor centre is run by the Department of Conservation, who are our New Zealand "Rangers" of NZ's National Parks and Reserves.

The Whakapapa Visitor Centre is situated at the main gateway to Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s first national park and presently attracting in excess of one million visitors per annum. The Centre was first established in the 1960s and was redeveloped and re-opened in March 2001.

The D.O.C. staff (our NZ park rangers) are on hand to provide information about walks, tramps and the wide range of activities to be enjoyed in the Tongariro National Park.

Facilities include:
interpretative displays
two audio-visual shows
quality merchandise for sale
weather and ski reports
track updates
hut tickets
maps
walking and tramping information

Trampers can purchase hut tickets and leave their intentions forms at the Centre as well as obtaining information about the Summer Nature Programme which runs over the Xmas - New Year January holiday period with organized educational walks and activities within the Park accompanied by the DOC staff.

Off Road Directions:
Turn off SH47 onto SH48, which is the Bruce Road that passes through Whakapapa and climbs Mt Ruapehu. The Visitor Centre is situated at the base of the mountain, just past the Chateau.
