On Village Avenue in an area that is mostly homes, there is a large stone structure that rises well above them. The structure, now a condominium complex, was once the prison for Norfolk County in Massachusetts.

The jail was where George Hersey was interred and put to death, and where Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were kept during their murder trial. George Hersey was tried for murdering three women and was executed in August 1862. Sacco and Vanzetti were tried for murder of a paymaster and security guard at a Braintree shoe company. They were convicted and executed in 1927, though many felt that they were innocent.

By the 1980s the prison was much too small to house the county's inmates. In 1992, the prison was replaced by a new, larger facility about one mile away. The building was remade into condominiums at a cost of $14 million, including four homes and 20 condo units on the property.
