There are Basic free camping facilities available along Clements Road on the Central Plateau of the North Island.
The campsites in the park, at the end of Clements Mill Road, are dominated by the Kaimanawa Ranges, an area of diverse terrain and vegetation including tall forest, scrub and tussock. Activities available include hunting, short bush walks and serious tramping. Bird watchers can look out for kereru, fantail, bellbird, rifleman, robin, grey warbler, tomtit, and kakariki.
Getting there: 27 km East of Taupo, turn right off SH 5 into
Taharua Rd and follow for 9.5 km, then turn right into
Clements Mill Rd. Drive 21 kms to the roadend. 4 campsites are available at the end of the road. Campfires permitted. Be aware of fire bans and higher fire risk during summer months. No drinking water available. Bring your own.
You will also pass another larger campsite in a grassy clearing on the right, some distance before the roadend, containing about 30 campsites. Water from a stream is available here.
There are other small areas in the trees along the roadside where there is room to pitch a tent, possibly more suitable to 4WD vehicles.
The whole road is gravel, narrow and windy, through dense native bush and forest. In case of falling trees, it is a good idea to carry a chainsaw if traveling this road and remember to let others know where you are. This is a popular area during summer over the Xmas and New Year holiday period. Drive along the road slowly with caution. Fill your fuel tank, there is no petrol available out here. No shops, the nearest town for supplies is Taupo.
Happy Camping!
