Early in 2006, Cardiff Council and Cywaith Cymru / Artworks Wales appointed local artists Heather Parnell, David Mackie and Andrew Rowe to help improve a run-down corner of Fitzhamon Embankment, as part of the Council's Neighbourhood Renewal Schemes programme.
The artists worked with local residents to develop ideas for a public art project. Food emerged as a key theme that united the people of Riverside - it plays a major part in local celebrations, festivals, trading and everyday life. Local school children and residents worked with the artists to produce over 1000 images, patterns and forms inspired by food.
The artists then used these drawings and models as inspiration for the artwork that you can see on-site today.
The sculptures represent a slice through various spices including mustard seeds, coriander, saffron, nutmeg, cardamom and ginger. They are made from galvanised steel. The bases around the sculptures are made from bronze and granite.
The artwork was officially unveiled by Cllr Judith Woodman (Executive Member for Communities, Housing and Social Justice) on Sunday 15th July 2007.
