Southwark Cathedral - London, England, UK - Cobblestone Buildings on Waymarking.com

The official name for Southwark Cathedral is the "Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St. Saviour and St. Mary Overie." It did not become a cathedral until 1905, although a religious building has occupied the site since 852. The current structure was initially constructed in 1220 with major reconstruction in 1420 after a devistating fire.

Many additions and repairs have continued throughout the centuries. It has survived the great London fires and bombing in World War II. (I asked during my tour how did such a large structure near the heart of London survive the bombings. "By the Grace of God," was the reply, but it was noted several stained glass windows were shattered. Since they could not be repaired, clear glass is now in their place providing additional lighting to the church.)

Southwark Cathedral is open for visitors Monday - Friday from 8:00a.m. - 6:00p.m. and Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays from 9:00a.m. - 6:00p.m. Please bear in mind the Cathedral may be closed to tours for services or special events, so please check the calendar before your visit.

Although admission is free, donations of £4.00 per person are highly recommended.
