Their figure is like a child, with a dish on his (her?) head and a carapace on his back.
They usually are living in a water. If their dishes on their head dry up, they would die. Because Kappa is good in swiming, we sometimes describes good swimmer "Kappa".

Their most favourite food is cucumber! Do you have an experience when you go to Sushi restaurant, and sometimes they call "Cucumber roll" as "Kappa Maki"? That is because Cucumber is Kappa's favourite food.
(In this context, "Inari" is a favourite food by the Fox. So the shrines where enshrine "Fox" as a god, are called "Inari".)

The street, where this statue stands, is called "Kappa bashi street", means Kappa bridge street. Actually, this is one of the hidden sightseeing spot both for international/domestic. A lot of kitchen tools and Food Samples are available here. No, not "a lot of", but "ALL".

This statue was built in 2004 by celebrating the 90th anniversary of establishing this Kappa bashi kitchen tool street.
Also, you will find several "Kappas" near this statue. Please visit here and hunt all the Kappa statues in Asakusa!
