The Craters of the Moon geothermal area is located in the Wairakei Tourist Park, just a couple of kilometres north of Taupo.
Park in the carpark where a team of volunteers will watch over your vehicle, leave a donation, and walk along the boardwalk where you will pass lots of bubbling and steaming craters, boiling mud pools, steaming vents and sulphur deposits all resembling something from another planet. From a look out you can gain a wonderful view over this amazing area, which looks a little bit like a moonscape.
The path is about 3 kms long and it takes about 45 minutes to walk around. The area was free of charge but a donation is greatly appreciated as volunteers monitor the carpark to prevent thefts from vehicles.
The area is dangerous so "Keep on the Boardwalk" at all times!
Approximate boardwalk length (feet): 5000ft
What is the boardwalk over?: A Boardwalk over a heated geothermal area at Craters of the Moon
Boardwalk material: Wood and plastic mesh.
