This rain gauge is situtaed in the Deancombe Valley which is in the water catchment area for Burrator Reservoir, which was built in the late 1800's as a water supply for the city of Plymouth.
Dartmoor rain gauges have been placed on the moor by the Environmental Agency to monitor the rainfall on the moor.
The average annual rainfall on Dartmoor varies between 1206mm (3.9ft) to over 2133mm (6.9ft) on the highest parts of the moor (over 500m) and most of the main river systems on Dartmoor rise in the areas of highest rainfall.
