Some glacier decided he didn't need this thing, and just threw it away alongside the road.

Madison boulder is unusual among rocks - it is a "Glacial Erratic" - a rock that has been picked up, moved and deposited by a glacier. In this case, a sheet of ice more than a mile thick. And even without that scenario, this is one stunning bit of geology...87 feet long, 23 feet wide and 37 feet high, weighing over 9 million pounds! These words evaporate when you actually see this megapebble for the first time...descriptions can't capture the feeling of walking up to it with mouth agape, brain galloping to grasp that this is one...rock...? The site is free, easily accessible from Route 113, and managed by the NH Dept. of Parks and Rockreation. Trophywife, of Geocaching fame, stands in as scale-model human in the photo.
