Robert Sterling compiled hundreds of old photographs of Joliet, Illinois and set them in a mosaic with more modern versions of the same location, which were shot by photographer Michael Conroy.

Each location was thoroughly researched to provide a complete narrative history of the activities and building that occured there over time. One such example is at the posted coordinates where visitors can see the Daniel Burnham designed public library and the statue of Louis Joliet - both of which are from 1903.

The book is laid out geographically allowing the reader to use the book for a walking or driving tour of Joliet. Because the book is 12 inches by 12 inches and a hardcover, it does not make a very good portable guidebook. However, it does offer readers a glance back into history and describing how Joliet has re-invented itself over time.
