(Details on the history of "The Biblical Bethel" - Taken from: "www.keyway.ca")

"The name Bethel comes from the Hebrew beth, meaning house, and el, meaning God. Bethel means House of God. Numerous events of Bible History occurred there, including God's appearance to Abraham and Jacob, and for some time it was the place where the Ark of The Covenant, containing The Ten Commandments, was housed."
"Bethel has a long connection to major Biblical events of the Old Testament"
"Bethel is located about 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of Jerusalem, west of Jericho and the Jordan River."
"Prior to the Israelites' entry into The Promised Land, as God commanded them, Bethel was originally a Canaanite city named Luz"
"When Abraham first entered Canaan, he camped between Bethel and Ai, and when he returned from Egypt he returned there and "called upon the name of The Lord"
"Jacob, while fleeing from Beersheba to Haran, had his Stairway To Heaven dream near Bethel."
"Years later, upon his return there, Jacob built an altar and renamed the place El-Bethel, and then Bethel. It was in that time period that God gave Jacob a new name - Israel."
"The Ark Of The Covenant was kept at Bethel for a long time under the care of Phinehas, the grandson of Aaron."
"Today, the Bethel of the Old Testament has been identified with the ruins of Beitin, a small village just south of Shiloh."

(Information gathered from "Town of Ira History")

Bethel was a thriving area midway between the villages of Hannibal in Oswego County to the north and Cato on the south edge of the Town of Ira. One of the best known buildings in the hamlet was the Methodist Church, built in 1824 and closed in the 1990's. The church building was taken down in the late 1990's due to extensive structural problems. Today, Bethel is basically a bedroom community.

Farming was the main occupation of people that settled the hamlet, however, other industries that sprung up over time included sawmills, tanneries, surveyors, general stores, blacksmith and carriage shops. Other early industries included a cooperage, limestone quarry and a kiln.

The country one-room schools were the means of educating the children for about 125 years in the Town. Ira had up to 14 school districts for many years. These schools also served as a culture center for the neighborhood, such as a library, for picnics, Church and a meeting place.
