The distillery was founded in 1823 on Auchentosham Estate, at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills overlooking the River Clyde, by John Bulloch a local corn merchant.
The early years were a struggle: both John and his son became bankrupt, and the distillery was sold to John Hart (Bulloch's distiller) and a local farmer, Alexander Filshie, whose family had lived in the neighbourhood since the 1600s. One of the conditions of the sale was that John Bulloch be allowed to live on site for the rest of his days: he died in 1846, aged eighty-seven!
Filshie's decendants owned Auchentoshan for 44 years before having to sell in 1877 following a disastrous harvest. In 1903 it passed to John & George Maclachlan, Brewers & Distillers in Glasgow, who also had a thriving wholesale wine and spirits business.
