"This unit was used to plow snow in Rural New ENgland and Canada from 1923 - 1990.
Although they are seldom seen in action snow plows are an important part of the railroad scene. In remote areas of the northern United States and Canada, snow removal is necessary to prevent the dereailing of trains.
This plow is one of thirty-six built by Canadian Pacific's Angus shops in Montreal between 1920 and 1929. It is a 20 ton, wedge type plow made for use on a single track (throws snow on both sides), Built without a self contained power source, this snowplow was pushed by one or two locomotives. The moveable "wings", which propel snow away from the track, extend the plows ten foot overall to sixteen feet when open. Moveable blades at the front, designed to clear the area between rails, can be raised at crossings to avoid damage to equipment. The snowplows cab contains compressed air tanks that operate the pneumatic system controlling the wings and blades, as well as providing air for a whistle used by the plow operator to signal the locomotive engineer.
