3 and a half years after the Wright Brothers made their historic flight at Kitty Hawk, the U.S. Army Signal Corps formed an Aeronautical Division. Although the Army had used balloons previously, this new division was the start of what would become 40 years later the United States Air Force. (Information and Airman's creed obtained from the US Air Force web site.)
Aircraft played major roles in every significant military engagement the United States participated in since 1907.
The aircraft pictured on the side of the U-Haul is the F-16 "Fighting Falcon" also known as the Viper, especially by its pilots. According to Wikipedia the F-16 was originally designed and built by General Dynamics in 1976. It is used by the air forces of 25 countries.
The building pictured on the U-Haul is the Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs Colorado. It was built in 1956. According to the Air Force's Fact Sheet the chapel was designed by Walter A. Netsch Jr. of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill of Chicago. It is a aluminum, glass and steel structure that features 17 spires.

This waymark is dedicated to Lt. Col. Hiram F. Herrick, USAF, (Ret.) deceased, who served his country in the Air Force for over 20 years including one tour in Vietnam as a navigator on an AC-47.
