This fine medieval parish church is located in the centre of the prosperous town of Ashburton in South Devon.

The earliest records of this church date from the 12th century when John the Chaunter, Bishop of Exeter(1186-91) gave it to the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral. The Benifice has been under their patronage since that time. When the Bishop of Exeter visited the church in 1314 he found it much dilapidated and order repairs. It seems that nothing was done until the early 15th century when a complete rebuilding took place. This was when Ashburton's prosperity was at its height.
The church was restored in 1775. In 1840 the chancel under went restoration with the removal of the priest's stalls, blocking of the priest's door and the East Window was rebuilt as a copy of the old window. Later that century, in 1883, the church received a major restoration. The restorers removed all the old plaster and the galleries put in place in 1775. They also renewed the floor and the seating. They left the church much as we see it today.
