The milestone was placed in its location by the Saltash Turnpike Trust.
The modernisation of the Saltash Ferry prompted a new route for the road from Saltash Passage to Plymouth. The Act of Parliament received the Royal assent on March 29th 1833. The milestone dates from this period. The new road was probably opened for traffic on Monday July 11th 1836 without ceremony.
