George Washington Sears, pen name "Nessmuk," was born in 1821 and loved to travel. He canoed his way through the Adirondacks, joined a whaling vessel to the South Pacific, and explored parts of the Amazon Basin. In the 1880s he wrote for Sports and Stream Magazine, and in 1884 wrote "Woodcraft." Then in 1887 "Forest Runes" was published, which is a book of poems. His well-used canoe is on display at the Smithsonian Institution. After traveling around the world he and his family moved to Wellsboro, PA where he later died, and now rests. This grave has a casting of his face, along with some leaves and an owl, with his signature in the corner.
