Sister Dora was born near Richmond in Yorkshire on January the 16th 1832. Although not a native of Walsall she came to be much loved and respected for her tireless work for the working people of the borough.
At her death in 1878 she was laid to rest in the Queen street cemetery and thousands mourned her passing.
The statue by Williamson of Esher cost over £1,000. It was unveiled on 11 October 1886. The relievos around the base of the statue show scenes of incidents from her working life.
