Grim's Grave Cairn and Kist is near the Langcombe Brook at the head of the Langcombe valley on South Dartmoor. The stones which make up Grim's Grave are local Dartmoor granite. There is parking near "The Scout Hut" which is about 2.5 miles away.

Grim's Grave is probably a Bronze Age burial structure more commonly described as a 'Retaining Kerb Circle'. It consists of a circle of 9 'kerb stones' inside which sits a kistvaen which is in remarkable condition. The slabs which line the kist are in position and there are the remnants of the two capstones which covered the grave. Sadly one of the cap stones of the Kist have been smashed, possibly by tomb robbers, at sometime in history. The grave was re-excavated by Worth who only found a single flint flake on the nearby surface which is more than likely out of context and came from the original cairn robbing. There are several other cairns and Kist nearby which may mean the Langcombe Valley was a special place for burial in the Bronse age.
On a more modern theme there is a story recorded by the Dizzycacher who has a cache nearby. He reports a recent story which I particularly like which goes as follows: In the 1970s Grim's Grave was the meeting place for a coven of witches from Plymouth. One of their rituals coincided with a night exercise held by the Royal Marines who crept unseen upon them. Once the soldiers became bored of watching the naked women frolicking around the huge fire they managed to lob a couple of thunder-flashes into the flames. The reaction of the witches following the resulting explosions can only be guessed at.
