St Petroc's church and churchyard stands at the north-west edge of the village of South Brent near the weir on the River Avon. South Brent is a thriving community on the edge of Dartmoor in South Devon.

There has been a church on this site from at least Norman times. There would have been burials around the church from the earliest days of the church. Sadly there are no records or gravestones from that period. The parish register which recorded burials in the churchyard start in 1677. This is very late for English churches and I suspect that earlier records may have been lost or destroyed during the English Civil War. Like most churchyards the gravestones mostly date from the 18th century and later.
