The first plate seeming added was a brass plate in 1770 recording that the water rose 10 inches higher than the flood of 1672.

The marks are next to Water Gate. The Water Gate dates from 1378 and gave access to the monastic precinct from the River Severn. In medieval times the river was tidal, and so the gateway would flood twice a day, creating a small dock where boats could unload. The roadway has since been raised by four feet.
