The tip of Garden Island (really just a peninsula) houses the Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre. The rest of the island is a military base. The public is allowed to only visit the tip and access is only by ferry. There is no charge to visit the area outside the building. There is a fee to ride the ferry and to enter the building.

The sign reads: "Eight River Class Frigates were built between 1943 and 1946. Designed as anti-submarine escort vessels, the River Class incorporated many new technologies and weapons developed from war experience. ... The River Class were twin screw vessels with a speed of 20 knots. The propeller displayed weighs 5 tons and is made of bronze."
