n the days when Callington was a pocket or rotten Parliamentary Borough electing two MPs, you could not vote in the election unless you owned property within the borough. There are borough boundary stones in Tavistock Rd, Liskeard Rd, Saltash Road, at West End and at Newport.
There are many stories of electoral corruption in Callington's history. The ranks of 50 or so legitimate voters were swelled by so-called Faggot votes. In 1826 one of many inquires into Callington's parliamentary elections declared faggot voting illegal. All this skullduggery came to an end with the 1832 Reform Act and Callington became part of the Eastern Cornwall Division.
The Borough Stone at West End is sited outside the West End Methodist Church. All the stones had Borough and two horizontal lines engraved on them. Sadly the words Borough have weathered away on most stones.
