Danish Saxon Conflict 997 AD - Battlefields on Waymarking.com

This stone is in the village of Lydford just outside the ancient castle.
In the 10th century, King Alfred (891-901) fortified the town against Viking invaders. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states: ‘Turning into the mouth of the Tamar (the Vikings) went up till they came to Lideford, burning and slaying everything they met’.

The plaque says
