In 1881, the two-story Sister Blandina Convent was built on the west side of the San Felipe de Neri Church. The convent was occupied by the Sisters of Charity, who staffed the parish school, until the late 1970s.
From the Access My Library website:
When Sister Blandina Segale and a group of nuns from Santa Fe arrived in Albuquerque's Old Town in 1881 to teach school, they took one look around the dusty plaza and decided to build a convent.
The construction entailed moving a graveyard and hiring a stonemason from Santa Fe, but eventually Albuquerque's first two-story adobe building was completed. Over the years, the still-standing convent, just west of San Felipe de Neri Church, also served as a school, post office and infirmary.
Although the past century has greatly changed the faces of the convent and other buildings in Old Town, a stroll around the plaza reveals many of its original structures. While many Victorian storefronts took on a "Pueblo Revival" appearance in the 1950s, vestiges of about 20 original structures can still be seen.
