In 1670, colonists established the first permanent European settlement in Carolina at this site. Today, this protected historic site interprets the story of the 17th century settlement and the natural environment the settlers encountered through the Animal Forest zoo. A reproduction sailing vessel, Adventure, helps to illustrate the importance of trade and commerce for the growing settlement. The original fortified town site is well preserved for archaeological research. A reconstructed palisade, ghost structure and other resources help bring the fortified area to life.
