The holy city of Teotihuacan was built between the 1st and 7th centuries AD. The site is dominated by the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon.

According to the UN Heritage register it was one of the most powerful cultural centres in Mesoamerica, Teotihuacan extended its cultural and artistic influence throughout the region, and even beyond.

At its peak the region was home to more than 150,000 people. Most historians believe the city's fall into decline following a series of harsh droughts in the 6th century, follwed by attacks by invading Toltecs sometime during the 7th or 8th centuries.

A tunnel built under the Pyramid of the Sun was discovered in the 1970's. It is still yet to be fully excavated.

Today, the site attracts a large numbers of tourists and worshippers.
