One of the best Mayan sites from the classical period between AD 500 and 700. The Palenque region extended throughout the basin of the Usumacinta River.
The region is thought to have collapsed in around AD 8th century, although a more modest agricultural community continued to live in the area to the present day.
Although the site was discovered by 'western' explorers soon after the arrival of the Conquistadors, it was not until the late 19th century that serious exploration began.
Archaeologists estimate only 5% of the site has been uncovered.
The most notable structures are the Temple of the Cross, Temple of the Sun, and Temple of the Foliated Cross.
