The archaeological site of Monte Albán sits atop a mountain in the southern state of Oaxaca. It was inhabited over a period of 1500 years by a succession of peoples – Olmecs, Zapotecs and Mixtecs.
Because the city was located on top of the mountain, a series of terraces, dams and canals were constructed to provide water.
The site contains a number of well preserved pyramids and features, including a 'ballgame' court. Carved symbols and motifs demonstrate the cities rich cultural heritage.
The nearby city of Oaxaca is located at the base of mountain. Like most Spanish colonial towns, it is built on a grid pattern radiating out from the central Zocalo. The city contains a number of large churches and cathedrals, as well as museums and art galleries. It is also home to the amazing Mercado 20 de Noviembre or the Market of Food.
Oaxaca hosts a number of festivals, the major one being the Guelaguetza, which occurs each Monday in July. It also attracts a high number of tourists during the Las Noches del Meurte (31 October-2 November).
The city is also considered by some to have the best examples of chocolate, including chocolate caliente and mole - a sauce used in savoury dishes.
