Burgwin-Wright House

Georgian style house built on foundation of abandoned jail for John Burgwin
(1731-1803), merchant and lawyer, Clerk of Court in Bladen and New Hanover
Counties, Clerk of N.C. Provincial Assembly, Secretary to Royal Governor Dobbs
and Treasurer of Province of North Carolina. Occupied by Lord Cornwallis,
April 7-21, 1781.
Deeded in 1799 to Joshua Grainger Wright (1758-1811) and wife, Susan Bradley
(1771-1842). He was a lawyer, Speaker of N.C. House of Representatives,
first president of Bank of Cap Fear, and judge of Superior Court of Law and
Equity and of Court of Conference. House altered and enlarged c. 1845;
remained in Wright family until 1867.
Saved in 1937 for preservation by The National Society of The Colonial Dames
of America in The State of North Carolina and restored as their headquarters." ~
