The windmill is on a grassy area above a rocky beach and was associated with the salt extraction process. It dates back to 1780 and was used to pump up seawater into salt pans.

The windmill has been recently restored, but is not working. It is open to the public, admission is free however if you wish to visit during the months of Sept - June you will have to pick up a key from St Monans Post Office or the Spar shop in West Street (£5 deposit).

There are lots of details nearby about the salt extraction industry that used to be on the site, and as an added bonus there are several excellent caches in the area.
