During the early 1900's, the site of Melbourne's Luna Park was set aside by the St Kilda council as a place of entertainment. In 1906, a fun park named Dreamland was opened, but closed several years later.
In 1911 the land was leased by American showman J D Williams to build a new fun park known as Luna Park.
The park closed during World War I, but reopened in the 1920's with a number of new attractions, including the Big Dipper roller coaster.
The park continued to be popular until the late 1970s, when a number of attractions began to show their age and a fire in 1981 destroyed the Giggle Palace.
In 1989, the Big Dipper was dismantled, but its replacement was never built. The Scenic Railway continues to provide a thrill for those who like rollercoasters.
