This area (which is no longer technically an island) is the home of a number of endangered species - including the piping plover, wood stork and black skimmer. It includes beach, tidal marsh & wetlands.
The purchase of Bird Island ensures protection of what was one of 3 remaining privately owned undeveloped barrier islands along the North Carolina Coast.
There are no special facilities and the nearest access is from the small town of Sunset Beach. There ia parking available near the pier at the center of town - from there, an enjoyable walk to the SW will get you to the reserve. The coordinates listed are at the location of the sign shown in the gallery - near the SW end of the island (and not far from the South Carolina border). From the pier to the end, it is about 2 miles - a long walk...but quite enjoyable.
Note - that the SW tip of Bird Island is actully in South Carolina which is 'landlocked' at this point..you'll need your GRSr to figure out when you've crossed the border - or need to spot the benchmark which marks the state line.
