Inishbofin Island translates as ‘ the island of the white cow ’. Long favoured by fishermen, farmers, exiled monks and fugitive pirates, the island has been inhabited for over 6,000 years.
The island measures five miles by three its main activities today are tourism, farming and fishing. There are five villages, West Quarter, Fawnmore, Middle Quarter, Cloonamore and Knock.
The memorial is located in the grounds of St. Colmans Church which is ajecent to the main pier.
The plaque reads: Erected by the people of Innishboffin in memory of all those who lost there lives at sea.
