The Granite Railway Bridge near King Tor was part of the Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway which opened in 1823 and was principally built to serve the nearby granite quarries. It was horsedrawn to start with then steam allowing the famous Dartmoor granite to be exported worldwide. The stretch between Princetown and Yelverton later became a branch line of the Great Western Railway. It closed in 1956 but has since become a popular walking route. The purpose of the bridge is for the animals and people to move freely without crossing the railway which was fenced.
