The Old Burying Ground is located on Barrington Street at Spring Garden Road, wedged between St. Matthew's and St. Mary's churches in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The cemetery was opened in 1749 is the resting place for over 12000 people (only 1000 headstone remain). The central feature, the Welsford-Parker Monument, pays tribute to the memory of local heros who fought in the Crimean War.
From the plaque at the entry gate:
Old Burying Ground 1749-1844.
This land was set aside as a common burial ground outside the stockade of the new fortifed town of Halifax.
First grave dug June 21, 1749.
Granted to St Paul's Church June 17, 1793.
Closed to burials August 18, 1844.
Welsford-Parker Monument dedicated July 17, 1860.
