As the Roanoke River was developed as a transportation 'highway' into the interior along the area of the NC/VA border, this lock & canal were built to avoid the "great falls" located on the river in the area of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. The canal was not used for transportation after 1880, but served to power 2 water generator facilties until 1912.
